Jussi P Niinku Pekka

Jussi P Niinku Pekka plays experimental folk in Finnish, brain folk (in Finnish “aivofolk”). Brain folk echoes the focal points of the gray area of consciousness. The lyrics are psychedelic and assertive and they take advantage of the opportunities of the diversity and complexity of the Finnish language. High-pitched guitar sounds are often combined with free-playing strings, creating a unique soundscape. Jussi has been making music since 2005 and previously released an LP with his Oulu-based band Stop The Reggae combining rock, punk and jamming. The Jussi P Niinku Pekka project started in 2017 when Jussi and family lived in Stockholm and stayed home with their at that time 2-year-old twins. New kinds of songs and lyrics began to emerge inspired by the change of landscape and language environment. Jussi P Niinku Pekka released his debut album Ihmeparantaa (2021) and Väliusva EP through Jussi’s own Aivofolk Records company. Ihmeparantaa was recorded in Oulu during one evening in the summer of 2017 with producer Mikko Mäkitalo. The record was born quickly but then it took four years before stars finally aligned to allow the release of the record in vinyl form. Jussi and Mikko are planning to make the next Jussi P Niinku Pekka album in the summer of 2022.

“The poetic expression, sometimes reminiscent of Pekka Streng’s most psychedelic moments, is free from the norms of traditional rhyme.” (Soundi 01/2022, translated by OAF)

OAF curators’ comments: “It is interesting to get acquainted with a new genre – “brain folk”. A kind of mental folk that definitely has a beneficial effect on consciousness. Perfect vocals, unbanal rhythmic pattern, interesting arrangements and instruments. Jussi P Niinku Pekka means catchy original mixtures of guitar sound, noises and voice. BIG music from Finland!”

Jussi P Niinku Pekka’s concert is on Thursday 18.8.2022 at G Livelab Helsinki. More information:
