VHS-klubi

Founded in 2015, VHS-klubi is a multidisciplinary art collective from Tampere whose activities revolve around video workshops, visuals, event organizing, and 1980s technology. The collective has organized over a hundred events, collaborated visually with more than a hundred artists, and held workshops at dozens of festivals. Simulation is a recurring theme in VHS-klubi’s events: the group imitates 1980s aesthetics, commercials, and game shows. Through copying, something new and fascinating emerges as two different eras collide.

At the Outsider Art Festival, the group will present Laserlevyraati (Laserdisc Jury). It is a concept and a TV studio simulation developed by VHS-klubi, where old 1990s karaoke videos are watched from laserdiscs. A pianist sets the mood with live accompaniment, judges award points, and the audience gets to sing!

Curators’ comments: ”VHS-klubi’s performances are nothing short of legendary, and it is an honor to have Laserlevyraati at the festival! The collective’s stubbornly authentic retro aesthetic, executed with an uncompromising style, is utterly captivating and completely sweeps you away.”
