The dance project for women prisoners at Vanaja Open Prison, was created by MCDanze, filmed by Paola Suhonen and published on Youtube in 2018. The project highlights the importance of finding creative and various ways for female prisoners, often coming from traumatic experiences and backgrounds.
This great project has challenged also other women’s prisons around the world to produce their own dance videos. The challenge was accepted for example by the Belgians. Vanaja Prison dance project promotes cultural activities and developing rehabilitative prison environments, especially for female prisoners.
Curators’ comment: These prisoners deserve a second chance! The high-quality dance work, joint movement, picturesque landscapes and costumes emphasize the dancers’ anonymity and create contradictions that go under the skin.
