Salla Karppanen is a young visual artist whose chosen technique is colored pencils. In Karppanen’s artworks, the artist draws own thoughts on paper as self-expression. Karppanen is skilled in drawing and works with intense colors. The outlines do not fumble and the proportions are right in place. The artist gets inspiration from horror films and series. In the artworks, Tiptoeing Jack, Jeff the Killer and the buddies of Black Hat are having adventures. Karppanen’s favorites are the wild creepypasta characters as well as cute pets and pokemon characters. Karppanen graduated from the Kaarisilta visual artisan line in 2019. Since 2020, Karppanen has been part of the Studio Viis collective in Lahti.
OAF curators’ comments: “Wow! The subject of horror really works well! Deeply expressive, spontaneous works, which are not limited by moral imperatives and social contracts. The images transmit an impressively aggressive message to the spectator, based on images from our entertainment culture. The works are created with a fantastic feeling for color and form.”
