OAF Talks brings the art world’s outsiders into the spotlight

OAF Talks is Outsider Art Festival’s discussion series, giving voice to the festival’s artists, curators and artistic mentors. Expect conversations and interviews spanning multiple art forms. You are warmly invited to join the discussion.

During the festival, OAF Talks events will take place both on-site at festival venues and online.

OAF × Runokuu Talks: Aatos Ketvel and Minna-Kaisa Kallinen, 15 August, 17:30–18:30

How does writing song lyrics differ from writing poems? What is small-scale publishing, and are there differences between independent publishing in music and poetry? Discussing these topics : Aatos Ketvel, Varjo Sarsila from Puoliuni Publishing and Minna-Kaisa Kallinen of Minna Records. Interviewer: critic Vesa Rantama.

OAF Talks: Self-archiving from the Representatives of Ukrainian Queer Community, with Galka, Katya, Lisa, Mariam, Nadija, Rina, Ton and Masha. 16 August, 18:00

OAF residency artists Ton Melnyk and Masha Ravlyk host a discussion and worksohp featuring visiting Ukrainian artists currently in Finland. “Creating collages or zines together with friends, comrades, or by yourself and chatting about self-archiving: what does self-archiving mean for us? What does it mean for communities? Art and craft as instruments of self-archiving; balancing between being anonymous and public.”

OAF × Espoo Ciné: Film program Q&A and screening, 19 August, 17:00–20:00

The OAF film screenings present a diverse selection of Finnish outsider cinema, in collaboration with Espoo Ciné. During the Q&A, participating filmmakers discuss their works, creative processes and backgrounds. The session is moderated by Tytti Rantanen, Executive Director of Espoo Ciné.

OAF Talks: OAF Academy 22 August, 15:00–17:00

OAF Academy, initiated by the Outsider Art Festival, is an arts programme that opens new possibilities of employment for marginal artists. Over the past three years the Academy has granted six outsider artists half-year stipends and helped them realize their artistic dreams. The discussion celebrates completed projects, shares experiences and looks ahead to the future of both the OAF Academy and the outsider-art field. Participants include OAF Academy artists, mentors and staff.

OAF × WeeGee Reads: The Great Lie about Disability, 23 August, 14:00–15:00

We consider Finland as a model country for disability rights, even though we do not understand even the principles, like how accessibility is a basic human right. Who are the ones that can and are allowed to create art? OAF X WeeGee Reads event brings together to speak of the matter poet Satu Kankaanpää and the creators of Finlandia winning book Suuri valhe vammaisuudesta, Riikka Leinonen and Sofia Tawast. The event is moderated by poet Sanni Purhonen from Espoo. The discussion includes Finnish Sign Language interpretation for the audience.
