Vapaa Sana

Vapaa Sana

Vapaa Sana (real name Sanna Ruokonen) is a spoken word artist based in Kerava. As a child, Vapaa Sana fell severely ill and became disabled, which made producing speech difficult. For this reason, spoken word art has been a particularly important form of expression for her. Ruokonen has been a trailblazer with her performances at the Poetry Slam Finnish championship finals and DIDA festival, among others.

The performance ”Vaikuttavaa runotaidetta” (”Imposing poetic art”) is an arresting experience full of expressive power. The texts delve into themes of society and humanity, emotions that are often hidden. The pianist in the performance is Heli Raami, who has composed all the piano scores for the pieces by Vapaa Sana.

Curators’ comments: “An inspiring artist whose texts are stunning and striking. A very promising poet.”
