Synergy Films is an inclusive filmmaking collective fighting for empathy and against oppressive ableism. Seventy percent of the group’s members are disabled or individuals classified under ICD diagnoses.
At the Outsider Art Festival, the group presents their film Litterator. The word ‘litterator’ is Latin and means ‘one who teaches letters’. In Litterator, the fiercest opponents of blind transcribers are highly intelligent text-processing robots. The film could be described as expressionist exploitation or sci-fi working-class cinema. It might also be considered a disability film, but not in the familiar sense. This time, disabled people are neither glorified nor pitied, but simply exist naturally within the story’s universe.
For Synergy Films, Litterator marks a significant step forward in inclusive filmmaking. The film’s key roles, including directing, production, screenwriting, and editing, are entirely in the hands of disabled individuals—not to mention the actors playing the leading roles. The team assembled for Litterator consists of audiovisual professionals and amateurs, both disabled and non-disabled.
Curators’ comments: “The film addresses the timely themes of the future of work and the participation of individuals who deviate from normative expectations of productivity. Röholm’s and Danielsson’s directorial debut is executed with uncompromising style and vision.”
