Suvi Miettinen is a self-taught visual and literary artist whose artistic awakening came in adulthood. In her art, Miettinen portrays the landscapes of her mind through both poetry and visual art. When she creates visual art, a poem is born — and vice versa: “When words fail to convey the message, the image continues the story,” Miettinen explains.
Professionally, Miettinen is a nurse specialized in disability work. She is currently studying at university with a particular interest in phenomena of exclusion and inclusion. Miettinen is also a trained expert by experience and a social media influencer. She has experienced more than a decade of trauma-related social exclusion but has recovered her sense of belonging through knowledge and art. Miettinen’s guiding principle could be summed up as: “Participation and art are for everyone!”
In her art, Suvi seeks to depict the emotions and experiences that are part of being human. At the Outsider Art Festival, she continues exploring these themes in her signature style by reciting her poems while the related visual works are projected in the background.
Curators’ comments: “Suvi Miettinen’s fusion of images and poetry approaches the theme of outsiderhood from an empowerment perspective. The union of images and text sketches an instruction-manual-like landscape for overcoming feelings of being an outsider.”
