Satu & Maima Tani: Breathing Reef

14.8.-15.9.2025

Breathing Reef extends across several locations in Espoo. In the lobby of the Espoo Cultural Centre, Maima Tani presents colourful textile works inspired by the underwater world. At Länsimetro stations, a print and digital exhibition features imaginative characters from the short films of the artists sisters Satu and Maima Tani. Kino Tapiola will also host a screening of the duo’s new short film and a performance based on it.

20–24 August – Lobby of the Espoo Cultural Centre: textile works by Maima Tani, including a coral dress and multi-metre crocheted jellyfish.

14 August–15 September – Länsimetro stations Espoonlahti, Kivenlahti and Tapiola: Breathing Reef and Other Life Forms by Satu and Maima Tani, portraying marine life and the artists’ film creatures.

15–17 August – Digital exhibition on advertising screens at stations between Lauttasaari and Kivenlahti: each station displays a series of five images of the Tani sisters’ work.

19 August, 17:00–19:00 – Kino Tapiola: performance and the new short film by Maima and Satu Tani, shown as part of the Outsider Art Festival film programme in cooperation with Espoo Ciné.

The exhibitions are free of charge, though some Länsimetro sites require an HSL ticket. Tickets for the 19 August film screening are available from Espoo Ciné.

The Länsimetro exhibitions are produced in cooperation with Espoo Cultural Services and Länsimetro. The film screening is organised in cooperation with Espoo Ciné.
