Iida Kilpeläinen is a 25-year-old comic book artist from Helsinki. She primarily works with comics, self-publishing zines of her works. In addition to comics, she creates numerous oil pastel pieces.
Central themes in Kilpeläinen’s art include self-acceptance, feelings of alienation in childhood, and how past circumstances shape one’s present life. As an autistic person, she has found verbal expression challenging. However, through art and comics, she has discovered a way to explore her emotions and thoughts, allowing her voice to be heard.
Curators’ Comments: “Kilpeläinen’s delightfully naïve, cartoon-like color chalk drawings succeed in tackling difficult subjects in a way that feels light. These works are technically accomplished; they almost feel like paintings.”
