OAF Film program dives into the deep end of humanity

OAF Film program is organized in collaboration with Espoo Ciné.
This year’s Film program at Outsider Art Festival draws inspiration from mythology and supernatural elements, dives into the deep end of humanity and contemplates interaction. OAF film screening venues are Kino Tapiola on Tuesday 19th of August in Espoo and Louhisali at Espoo Cultural Centre on Sunday 24th of August.

Shortfilms at OAF film screening are Paula’s House (Doreen Mwirigi), Unwelcome (Folk Extreme & Teatteri NEO), Psydopia (Hannes Renvall), Silvanus (Haus & Nipsu), Tough Finnish Man (Jari Nordström), I need to tell you something (Samra Šabanović), Litterator – The One Who Teaches Letters (Synergy Films), Decomposing (Satu & Maima Tani) and a new film by Kalevi Helvetti.

Curators for the short film screening are Executive director of Espoo Ciné Tytti Rantanen and artist duo Satu and Maima Tani.

We asked director of animation Paula’s House, Doreen Mwirigi, her feelings about the upcoming festival:
”I feel a deep sense of gratitude and quiet anticipation. Paula’s House is such a personal, introspective film. Sharing it through OAF, which celebrates outsider perspectives and unconventional voices, feels like exactly the right context. I’m looking forward to the conversations it might spark, even the quiet internal ones.”

Paula’s House represents a rarity, a Kenyan queer film. Doreen wishes her film would evoke empathy and recognition:
I hope the audience leaves with a deeper sense of empathy for those whose identities are often softened, hidden, or silenced. And for queer viewers especially, those who have in one way or another sacrificed their identities for peaceful co-existence, I hope it offers a moment of recognition and the gentle reminder that they’re not alone in that search.”

Riikka Papunen, artistic support mentor at Teatteri NEO, is delighted on behalf of NEO’s actors for the experience the upcoming performance will offer:
“It is a great honor and a great opportunity for us to give the actors of NEO national and international visibility. When the film premiered in Tampere in October, many of the actors saw themselves on the big screen for the first time. It was a memorable moment and it will be equally memorable to travel to Espoo and see the film on the big screen again!”
