Hannes Renvall

Hannes Renvall is a filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist who has created dance films, short films, experimental films and music videos. He navigates the no-man’s-water between cinematic storytelling and experimental cinema, observing the corals that appear and disappear. Renvall has won numerous awards both in Finland and internationally; for instance, his dance film Joitain tapoja hävittää ruumis (“Some Ways to Get Rid of a Body”) won the award for Best Finnish Dance Film in 2017.

At the festival, Renvall will present his film Psydopia (2025). The film tells the story of an old-school author who decides to take a short vacation and turns off his phone for a few days — just as AI cyborgs coincidentally take over the world and kidnap him. The film portrays the confusion experienced by the author as AI genuinely tries to take everything away from him. Having underestimated the power of AI, the protagonist now faces an existential challenge.

Curators’ Comments: “Psydopia has a charmingly peculiar atmosphere, and the film doesn’t over-explain itself. The encounter between AI and humans offers plenty to relate to.”
