Lauri Hyvärinen (b. 1986, Helsinki) is a sound artist and musician who uses the guitar as his primary instrument and sound source. His approach to sound is both exploratory and practical, with improvisation remaining at the very core of his artistic expression. Hyvärinen utilises the possibilities of improvisation, compositional and minimalist structures in search for shared and intensified social and spatial constructions.
Known as a highly active live performer, Hyvärinen has toured extensively throughout his career across Europe, the USA, Japan, and South Korea. He maintains ongoing collaborations with numerous domestic and international artists, including Ilia Belorukov, Sergio Castrillón, Clara de Asís, Léo Dupleix, Taneli Viitahuhta, and Naoto Yamagishi. His extensive and ever-growing body of work includes dozens of solo and collaborative releases on labels such as Bokashi Records, Falt, and Hitorri.
Curators’ comments: ”Hyvärinen’s approach to the guitar and sound is exceptionally profound and hypnotic. Few guitarists can coax such wild and genuinely unheard-of sounds out of this classic instrument. This is something you absolutely must experience live!”
