Mikael Valjakka (b. 1995) is a visual artist working at the Kaarisilta Art Studio in Lahti. Despite his young age, his exhibition career already stretches back to 2010. His expression is built on clear surfaces and skillfully rhythmized lines, which allow him to always distill the absolute essence of his subjects. The versatile artist has produced numerous portrait paintings and sculptures, but he is currently focusing specifically on relief printmaking, pulling prints from linoleum blocks he carves himself.
For his subjects, Valjakka often chooses animals and nature, gathering ideas for his works by observing plants and birds on his walks. Animals appear in his works as sympathetic companions. Valjakka’s working process is unhurried, and he finds the physical carving of the block deeply pleasing. “I have the inspiration, you see. It feels nice when animals come into being, like a sloth, for example. The body structure feels strong when I carve,” Valjakka says, describing his process.
Curators’ comments: ”Valjakka creates absolutely stunning graphic works that strongly display his entirely original touch. The expressive clarity of the pieces, combined with rich textural thinking, makes them truly captivating!”
